Drivers Licence Demerit System May Cause Most South Africans To Lose Their Drivers Licences
The licence demerit system was introduced by the department of traffic on 1 September 2006 in Pretoria, its a new system that aims at removing dangerous drivers in South Africa's roads, by suspending or revoking their licences. Latest news on the licence fraud and corruption in testing stations.
The driving licence demerit system is based on the Australian model following the drivers card licence that makes it possible to store in every record of the driver. The system is actually not a new one it is being practiced in other countries.
What will happen is, every driver will be given 12 points, but if you loose the points through:
Being caught speeding.
Not having your licence with you.
Losing your licence.
Not wearing your seatbelt.
Your car lights are not working.
Drinking and driving.
Running over a pedestrian.
Not stopping at a stop sign.
Then your allocated points will be deducted in any violation of the above.
How will the points be allocated?
Every year each driver will be given the 12 points if you lose the 12 demerits in a year that is when you will be suspended. After receiving 3 suspensions from the traffic department, your licence WILL be cancelled. And if in a year a driver did not receive any suspensions, the following year, there would be an addition to the last years 12 points plus a bonus points. This will be genuinely done to improve the driving behaviour that is occurring in South Africa, meaning we are slowly getting rid of all those bad drivers. List of Testing centres in South Africa
But in occurrence offer major traffic violations, the department of transport will not change its old system, it will still let drivers face up to the normal procedures in court.
For example this is how the demerits system will be rated to a unit scale...
2 points will be deducted, if you are found with an unregistered car, you'll be left with 10 penalty scores which means a fine of R500.
2 points will be deducted if found not having your drivers licence with and you'll be getting a R250 fine.
1 point will be deducted if found not wearing a seatbelt and you'll be getting a fine of R250
3 points will be deducted if found overloaded by 25% and you'll receive a fine of R1 250.
3 points will be deducted if you did not stop at a stop sign.
Fines For Speeding Limit
1 point will be deducted from your demerit if you are 21% to 30% over the speed limit and you will getting a fine of R500
2 demerit point will be given if you are 31% to 45% over the speed limit and you will be given a R750 fine.
No demerit will be deducted if you are speeding up to 20% over the speed limit but you will be presented with a fine of R250.
You will be fined R1 250 if you are doing 46% to 60% over the speed limit and 3 points from your demerit will be deducted.
2 driving that may strongly jeopardise you loosing a driving licence and getting to court
But there is one speed limit and driving law that wont be tolerated in South, and from this violation 4 demerit points will deducted, that is if you doing more than 60% over a speed limit. The law is set to not even fine you but let the court of order to determine the fine. So do not speed!!!!
Remember the card licence? You will have to be retested if you have lost your drivers licence and didn't converted to the new card format. All drivers need to be alert and stay on top of such cases because the new drivers licence demerit system is going to surf out many in our roads.
Overall we as South Africa's are hoping the new drivers licence demerit system will achieve better and safe driving, less road accidents, less fines, less road rage because they should give out a fines for that! The Transport department is really trying to minimise some of the violations and crimes being committed in our traffic departments and we hope we can get to a stage where a driver is only a driver if he or she follows the rules learned when he studied for the K53 learners licence.
