Pass Parallel Parking In Your Drivers Licence Test

Parallel  parking is one of the more difficult types of parking to do. It is advisable you learn the exact method from a traffic school. Once you have mastered the parallel parking technique you will be on your way to passing the driver licence test! On this page we will go through all the steps that are required for parallel parking by you in the drivers examination...

As there are 2 forms (i.e.. Right and left) of parallel parking in the yard your driver's license examiner will choose which side you begin from and you will be required to manoeuvre your vehicle to the starting position.. At this stage 2 things should come to your attention for the side parking:

Entering and leaving.

When Entering The Parallel Parking Bay You May Do As Follows:

  • You can ask for a second attempt if you feel you are not going to make it... You can only do this if you did not hit any obstacles or poles.
  • You may stop at anytime to check where you are while you are parallel parking.

Tips On How To Enter The Side Parking

  1. Check rear view mirror, side mirrors and blind spots
  2. Signal intention (Indicate)
  3. Select gear
  4. Obtain clutch control
  5. 5 point check
  6. Release parking (hand brake) brake
  7. Start moving
  8. Check respected blind spot before turning your vehicle towards the parking bay
  9. Manoeuvre your car into the parking bay without touching any obstacles or mounting the kerb.
  10. Counter steer if you require a second movement forward
  11. Stop your vehicle in the demarcated area
  12. Pull up hand brake
  13. Neutral
  14. Cancel indicator

The Drivers Licence Examiner

You are only allowed 3 movements when parallel parking: the first being a reverse movement towards the parking bay and then 2 more movements moving yourself into the marked off area. Remember you are not allowed to hit any obstacles or mount the kerb.

When Leaving The Parallel Parking Bay

The Driving instructor will advise you and tell you when to leave the parking bay and where to move to next. You still must not hit any obstacle (Like bumping into a pole) or mount the kerb. You may leave the parking bay with as many turns or movements as you want just do not touch those obstacles!

Tips On How To Exit The Side Parking

  1. 5 Point check (Rear view mirror, side mirrors, blind spots)
  2. Signal intention (Indicate)
  3. Select required gear
  4. Obtain clutch control
  5. 5 Point check
  6. Release hand brake
  7. Steer (Manoeuvre) out of parking bay without hitting any obstacles
  8. Cancel indicator.
