How To Steer A Heavy Motor Vehicle
- Both your hands should be on the steering wheel at all times except when you are changing gears.
- Position hands on the steering wheel in a ten-to-two or quarter-to-three position with palms of hands and thumbs on circumference of steering wheel.
- Always steer in a controlled manner to avoid cutting or negotiating corners or wide bends.
- When steering or turning use the push and pull method.
- Steer smoothly.
- If possible do not wander or straddle lane markings.
- Adjust positioning with due regard to moving or stationary hazards.
- Keep at least one hand on the steering wheel at all time
- Do not turn steering wheel whilst vehicle is stationary.
- Counter steer when necessary.
What Is A Good Following Distance?
It is advisable to always maintain at least a three (3) second following distance when you are behind another vehicle. When you are driving at night or conditions are wet or slippery or when bad weather is around please increase this following distance to at least four (4) seconds.
How To Change Lanes In A Heavy Motor Vehicle (Lane Changing)
- Make sure you obey all traffic signs, signals, road rules and road markings.
- Check your side mirrors, rear view mirror and your appropriate blind spot.
- Signal intention (Indicate).
- Check your appropriate blind spot once more.
- When safe, steer into the lane you wish to change to.
- Cancel indication.
