If you've sat in those very very long queues on the N1 over the last few years then the arrival of the Gautrain must be like music to your ears. OK I know it's going to cost more what with the Tolls soon to arrive and all... but my goodness what a pleasure not to be stuck every day in those long slow stop start never ending N1 traffic jams.
You pay for your travel on the amazing Gautrain by using what is known as the Gautrain Gold Card so before talking about costs associated with Gautrain travel we nee to talk a bit about the new form of Gautrain currency namely the Gautrain Gold Card. 3 basic ways to pay for Gautrain Fares, Gautrain Fees and Cost of Gautrain Travel:
- Pay as you go on the Gautrain
- 7 Day Gautrain Pass
- 35 Day Gautrain Pass
The Cost of Gautrain: Gautrain Rates & Gautrain Fares & Prices: Pay as You Go Method of Payment for Gautrain Fees
This method applies mainly to the occasional traveller on the Gautrain. If you're a regular then you would rather go for a 7 Day Pass or a 35 Day pass as described below.
Of course the cost depends upon how far you travel but to give you an idea...
if you're an occasional user then the maximum fare applies to travelo between
Park Station (Johannesburg Central) and Hatfield station in Pretoria. This cost
would set you back a measly R46 as an occasional user... OK if you travel a lot
it mounts up but by any standards for this type of travel and by international
standards the cost is low.
Examples of Gautrain Costs or Gautrain Fees and Travel Rates or Rail Fares
If you are a Pay as You Go traveler (ie occasional Gautrain user) you will pay a different Gautrain Price amount than 7 day pass or 35 day pass users. In other words Gautrain fees depend not only upon distance traveled but also number of days traveled. This makes perfect sense since the frequent user should be able to get access at a somewhat lower Gautrain fare rate then the occasional passenger.

The maximum Gautrain price fare you will pay is R49 per single trip. This cost is for the longest leg namely Park Station to Hatfield Pretoria... remember Park station is not yet operational owing to Bombela Consortium tunnel problems between Rosebank and Park Station in Johannesburg.
The minimum Gautrain price for a ticket is R19 and would be for a short trip between say Hatfield and Pretoria. The maximum charge of R49 would get you from Park Station all the way to Hatfield in Pretoria.
If you think about it R49 is a very low cost to travel in comfort and unhindered by traffic jams all the way from Johannesburg Park Station to Hatfield in Pretoria.
I'm quite sure that this Gautrain Cost is less than the petrol costs for most cars and especially those lined up in long traffic queues
Take into account the impending toll gate fees then the Gautrain cost of R49 is a steal. Quite frankly I am amazed at the low cost of using the Gautrain and the very affordable Gautrain prices that allow you to travel across the Gautrain route. In fact if you think about it for a moment ask yourself the question... how is it possible to travel in comfort and quickly all the way to Pretoria from Sandton or OR Tambo airport for a cost lower than the what it will cost in vehicle toll fees to travel the same route/distance? Never mind the petrol cost and other wear and tear charges on any vehicle.
Always remember the following if you're a regular Gautrain user:
You must have a minimum of R20 available on your Gautrain Gold Card to log in at any fare gate. Also don't forget to make sure your gold card balance is enough to pay for parking fees and bus fares
