Where does the Gautrain Operate... what is the Gautrain Route?

There are 2 main Gautrain routes: Gautrain Route 1 is known as "The Gautrain Airport OR Tambo Service" route: The other main Gautrain route takes passengers to Pretoria central. The main hub is situated close to the Lombardy offramp adjacent to Alexandria on the N3

  1. The Gautrain rail journey begins at the newly revamped and modernised OR Tambo (ORTIA) International airport in Kempton park. The Gautrain rail service runs to the Sandton CBD via the Marlboro station. It is the Marlboro station that acts as the link between the airport leg and the Pretoria leg.
  2. In preparation for this important convergence of rail and road routes the Marlboro highway offramp has been considerably enlarged and improved to make access to and from the main highway much easier much than in previous years. Prior to this motorway modernisation it was a nightmare to access the on and offramps at this critically important Marlboro road junction  This Gautrain route also operates (when finalised) between Johannesburg Park Station and Pretoria or more accurately Tshwane's Hatfield Station via the Centurion Gautrain station. At the time of writing the leg between Sandton CBD and Johannesburg Park station is not in operation owing to engineering problems associated with water leakage into the tunnel connecting Johannesburg's Park Station and the Sandton Gautrain station.  Also at the time of writing (August 2011) the latest information on the Rosebank to Johannesburg CBD was provided in the following press statement:

"Gautrain Rosebank to CBD route launched: For those who live in the north and work in the Joburg CBD, the Gautrain has made getting to work much more convenient. The train might not yet be in operation between Rosebank and the CBD, but from today (August 29th 2011) a bus service will get you there. The Gautrain announced this morning that it is launching a temporary Rosebank to Joburg bus route until the train for that area starts running. Errol Braithwaite, the technical executive of the Bombela Concession Company, said this service would continue for several months until the train between Rosebank and Park Station was operational. From Monday, the buses will run every 12 minutes during peak times (5.30 to 8.30am and 4 to 7pm), and every 20 minutes during off-peak times, Monday to Friday. The buses will travel between Rosebank station and the corner of Simmonds and Anderson streets in the CBD.
