Why Do People Treat a Stop Sign Like a Yield Sign?

South African drivers, treat a stop sign like a yield sign. What is the difference between the 2 signs and what does the K53 say about the 2 signs.

K53 Descriptions

Stop sign; Bring your car to a complete stop, before the white stop line.

Yield sign; Decrease speed, give way to on coming traffic, only move when its safe

The difference from a stop sign and a yield sign

A stop sign you MUST come to a complete stop, put your car hand break up and gear number 1. When its your turn you move off. A yield sign, you decrease your speed, check for safety and when it is move off.

I took a drive with my friend, around the roads of Johannesburg, just to check the reality of this yield sign and stop sign. And guess what South Africa? By me bringing my car to a total stop on a sign that says stop sign, bring my hand break up and gear lever number one. By doing this I seem to have disgusted a few drivers on the road. I felt the pressure of one guy behind me, he ended up hooting for me to move. Road Signs For Learners Licences

Now I thought this was because I was a learner driver. I gave my friend the car and we did the same thing again, bring our car to a total stop. Hazards where the menu of the day!

When in a hurry I would understand, but you cant tell me that every tom and dick was in a hurry in those 2 hours. People have forgotten what a stop sign is, they treat it like a yield sign. They decrease the speed and move off. That's if there are other cars waiting to go. When there is no traffic waiting to pass, or well, why stop?

Now this makes me wonder how people treat the yield sign, I don't want to check that out, because I'm afraid of what I might find out.

Why do you think a traffic officer will stop you, give you a R500 fine of not stopping on a stop sign. Its because you are suppose to bring your car to a complete stop when you see a stop sign.

South Africa is one of the countries that have a few good drivers

Imagine these good drivers being polluted by bad drivers, they will give up on their good mannered driving skills and adapt the bad once, because that is what everybody does.

For example: When I drive someone's car and his not a driving instructor. The first few stop signs, I come to a complete stop do my 5 point checks and move. Just because of that I get this attitude from the guy behind me. Do you think if this guy keeps on driving behind me for a long distance, I will stop at the next stop sign?

I must confess I didn't, because he was on my back, trying to pass me, letting me know that I'm wasting time by stopping. I know I shouldn't feel the pressure and mind him, but I'm a  LEARNER driver and that time we didn't have the learner sign on. So he thought these guys are wasting time.

I appeal to all South African drivers, lets try and treat a stop sign like a stop sign not a yield sign. Because these 2 signs are different and can never be the same.

Stop when you have to stop and yield when you have to yield!!! Mercy If I offended a few brothers and sisters...
